Rugby

"The WRU is delighted to support Gemau Cymru. Sevens rugby is one of the fastest growing sports since its inception as an Olympic sport. The players in this tournament have a real opportunity to take the first steps to Olympic selection in 2016. Wales are the current Rugby Seve ns World Champions and compete in 8 World Series events annually in places like Dubai, Hong Kong, Wellington and Las Vegas. Many of the current Wales Senior team, including Shane Williams, James Hook and Jamie Roberts have passed through the Sevens unit emphasising the vital component it can play in a players pathway."

Until Gemau Cymru 2011, football was my sport. I was part of the Cardiff City academy for 10 years, but I had just been released and was looking for my new club. I took part in Gemau Cymru in the 7-a-side team for my school  as a favour to help the school out as they were short of players. I would never have imagined what happened next! The 7-a-side manager for Wales, Paul John was there and he offered me a chance to practice with the Welsh developmental team. Within weeks I was representing the team in Romania, and since then, I've signed a contract to be part of the team full time. It has given me opportunities to travel and play in Sri Lanka, New Zealand and this year Las Vegas. All thanks to the Gemau Cymru! '
