Canoeing

“We are delighted that canoeing will feature in Gemau Cymru this summer.  Gemau Cymru is an excellent event for young athletes to showcase their talent, and the games will provide a much needed legacy programme in support of the London 2012 Games. Canoe Wales looks forward to a successful programme and to continue working with the Urdd and the many partners who have worked hard to make this event a reality”.

Will Jones: Slalom Ambasssor

I am a 17 year old student at Ysgol Plasmawr currently studying for A levels.  I have been slalom kayaking for  just over 2 years and I am currently in Division 1 for K1, Division 2 for C1 and Premier/Division 1 for C2.  I train with my club, Seren Dwr and Canoe Wales at Cardiff International White Water Centre three times a week and compete most weekends all around the country.  I am part of the Welsh Squad and represent Wales in the Pan Celtic races in K1.  I have also started to train to compete in Sprint Kayaking races and I am looking forward to my first race at the start of May in North Wales.

I have enjoyed Gemau Cymru in the past and look forward to taking part again this year and representing my sport as an Ambassador.  I look forward to being able to introduce more people to the sport as I am sure they would enjoy it as much as I do.

My name's Megan Herritty. I am 16 years old and I live in Penarth. I have been kayaking for just under 3 years. Initially I competed in slalom, working my way from Division 4 to Division 2. After taking a year out in 2012, I decided to come back to the White Water Centre early this year, only this time to train in sprint kayaking. Since then I have been enjoying paddling and training for races. I love water sports, especially kayaking as it's fun, exciting and there's always new challenges to get stuck into! Not to mention all the new friends you meet and skills you develop. My other hobbies are playing guitar, basketball and badminton. I look forward to representing sprint kayaking in the 2013 Gemau Cymru and I wish all participants the best of luck in their chosen sports!
