EISTEDDFOD CEREDIGION 2010 SCIENCE COMPETITIONS
HOMEWORKSciCast Physics
Institute of PhysicsCompetition for groups or individualsAge: under 25SciCast Physics challenges you to use your imagination and creativity to make a mini movie that explains a principle of physics in an entertaining way to non-scientists.
The movie should be no longer than 2 minutes 30 seconds and should explain a physics concept rather than just demonstrating it e.g. tell us why you can stick a kebab skewer through an inflated balloon without it popping instead of just showing that it’s possible.

SciCast PhysicsScientific posterCompetition for groups or individualsAge: Yr. 12, 13 and under 25Design a poster on a scientific topic that will attract the attention of the public and increase their understanding of the topic. It may be based on school, college, university or research work or project. Scientific is interpreted in its broad meaning, covering topics on pure or applied science, mathematics, the environment, technology or health. An attractive combination of text (Welsh only), pictures and diagrams (original, not copies) using colours where appropriate, is expected. The total area of the poster should not measure more than A1 size. The space may be divided between up to 8 pages of A4 size.
Adjudicator: Dr Iolo ap Gwynn
Prize: £200 (Y Gymdeithas Wyddonol Genedlaethol) to be awarded according to the adjudicator's discretion
Details for submitting the work:
You should:
- present the poster on CD disk in the form of a PDF file, if possible, or a MS Powerpoint file or similar may be received.
- also present a smaller copy of the poster printed on an A4 or A3 paper sheet.
- post the material to: Gwyddorau, care of Swyddfa’r Urdd, Ffordd Llanbadarn, Aberystwyth SY23 1EN, by 1 March 2010, and send an e-mail to gwyddorau@urdd.org noting that the work has been sumbitted.
Build a small wind turbine for generating electricity
Centre for Alternative TechnologyCompetition for groups or individuals with the adjudication on the Eisteddfod fieldAge:
Tuesday: Yr. 3, 4, 5 and 6Thursday: Yr. 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11
Friday: Yr. 12, 13 and under 25Build a small wind turbine that generates electricity. The competition will be adjudicated on the Eisteddfod field by measuring the power generated by the turbine when it is placed in a wind tunnel. The competitors should bring their turbines to the field on the specified day. The award will be based on the turbine that generates the maximum power on the day of the competition. For teacher/competitor notes of guidance on how to build the turbine, details on the limitations to the dimensions of the turbine, and registration form go to:
Centre for Alternative TechnologyPrize for each age category: free entry to the Centre for Alternative Technology site for a class of pupils/students from the winning school/college/university.
ON THE FIELD
Robots
Computer Science, Aberystwyth UniversityCompetition for teams (three in a team)Age: Yr. 7, 8 and 9Day: ThursdayRobots that operate in difficult, dangerous and dirty environments need to be able to work efficiently on their own. They need to balance the actions required for doing their task quickly, doing their task efficiently and doing their task safely. Balancing these requirements requires intelligent use of software control systems and good physical design of the robot. This competition encourages careful thought about these requirements in a realistic and fun environment.
The team competition is to match the control and design of a small robot boat to efficiently move cargo from one place to another. A limited time and limited resources are available, just as they are in real engineering environments. Good organisation in order to make the best use of the available resources is the key! All necessary equipment is provided for the competition.
Adjudication: Computer recording of boat performance.

Centre for Alternative TechnologyCompetition for individualsAge: Yr. 3, 4, 5 and 6Day: Monday and TuesdayBuild a model of a wind turbine in a workshop on the Eisteddfod field. The models will be adjudicated daily and the name of the winner announced on the field. All necessary materials and equipment are provided. For further details on wind turbines go to:

Tuesday: Yr. 3, 4, 5 and 6
Wednesday: Yr. 5, 6, 7 and 8
Thursday: Yr. 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11Solve a collection of mathematical puzzles that will be provided on the day. Many of the day’s puzzles and activities will illustrate the mathematics behind the Eisteddfod in some perhaps unexpected ways! For examples go to:
